Bone broth is a key part of the cleanse for those that chose to add it. This can help you feel more grounded and nourished and add TONS of gut healing properties.
But do you struggle to make a simple, delicious, & GELATINOUS bone broth?
Here is a simple recipe to do so!
I use a crockpot to make this recipe.
1) Roast your bones in the oven for roughly 40 min on 320• or 20 min on 400• just until they're nice and gold brown.
Local bones of the animals on the land you live on are superb and offer even more health benefits. I recommend you go to your local butcher or health store to find some!
I use wild venison bones being on Maui and Beef bones from Molokai and wild chicken bones from Big Island!
2) While the bones cook, add some fresh, local, & organic herbs and spices to the pot such as:
• Garlic
• Chives
• Ginger
• Sage
• Fennel
• Celery Leaf
• Rosemary
• Oregano
• Turmeric
• Onion
• Thyme
• Burdock Root
• Salt & Pepper
• Cumin
• Chili pepper
• Marshmallow Root
Mix and match, use them all, use others! Whatever works for you.
3) Add the roasted bones on top of herbs and spices in the pot.
4) Add filtered water, Spring water, or R.O. water (make sure it's fresh, clean, and safe water) JUST to the top of the bones so everything is perfectly covered. This will allow for a fully gelatinous broth!
5) Let cook on high in the crock pot for roughly 8-10 hours, then switch to low for 8-12 hours.
Cook in total for at least 12-24 hours for best results a 24 hour ore more process.
An easy way to measure this is you can cook it on high throughout the day then low when you go to bed, then its ready to be processed at the same time or later than you started it the day before!
6) Strain the broth into large pot or large jars to process the liquid gold.
7) Place in fridge for 6-12 hours to allow the fat to separate and harden on top and to also allow the collagen to harden/build up to become gelatinous!
8) Once you're ready to enjoy, separate the solidified Fat layer on top from the broth and save this later for cooking. SO YUMMY.
9) Give broth a giggle test and admire the beauty of the gelatinous broth you just made and ENJOY YOUR YUMMY GUT HEALING GOODNESS!
Enjoy your broth by sipping on it, cook rice & pasta with it by replacing the water, make yummy sauces and soups, or eat it like lil jello chunks throughout the day!
Pro tip: for sipping broth add an egg to your broth and blend in blender on high for 5 seconds 😋
A common question for making very gelatinous bone broth is
"Is the bone broth super fatty when it's gelatinous like this?" and this is a great question!
So when your bone broth becomes gelatinous like this, it's a sign that it's very rich in collagen, which has been extracted from the bones during the cooking process. The Collagen itself isn't fatty because its actually a protein. The gelatinous bone broth happens when you let it cool and the collagen gets cold. Sign of great nutrient dense broth.
This also allows the fats to separate on top and become a seperate layer.
When you skim off the top layer of fat, you are removing most of the actual fat content from your broth. I save this for later for cooking!
So, after removing the fat layer, your bone broth is not fatty, even though it's nice and thick with the rich texture due to the collagen. But even with skimming the fat layer off, it's possible that some small amounts of fat remain in the broth. This residual fat can coat your lips slightly when you drink the broth. Also the collagen can be so silky and somewhat slick on your mouth which might be perceived as oiliness. Straining the broth again after this is best to remove any excess fats if you wish!
Bone broth is packed with benefits, especially for your gut health. Here’s a straightforward rundown of the top 10 benefits:
1. Supports Gut Health: The gelatin in bone broth helps protect and repair the lining of your digestive tract, which is great for overall digestive health.
2. Eases Joint Pain: Collagen from the bones can improve joint health by restoring cartilage and reducing pain and inflammation.
3. Improves Skin Health: Collagen also helps keep your skin firm and hydrated, which can reduce wrinkles and dryness.
4. Boosts Immunity: Bone broth is full of minerals and amino acids like zinc and selenium that strengthen your immune system.
5. Helps Detox: Glycine in bone broth supports your liver in flushing out toxins from your body.
6. Fights Inflammation: Amino acids like arginine and glutamine in the broth have anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce swelling and irritation in the body.
7. Strengthens Bones: The broth contains calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, essential for strong and healthy bones.
8. Promotes Sleep and Calmness: Glycine might also help you sleep better and feel more relaxed.
9. Aids Weight Management: Bone broth is low in calories but can make you feel full, which helps with natural weight loss since you're also reducing inflammation.
10. Keeps You Hydrated: Its high water content helps keep you hydrated, which is vital for your overall health.
Bone broth is a delicious and nutritious addition to your everyday diet, particularly useful for its gut-healing properties of course. While adding to your cleanse journey for extra nutrients, flavors, and to just switch things up a bit its providing you with an array of extra health and detox benefits.
